[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Table] section 2 is a pipe syntax tutorial and 2.1 a subsection specifically dealing with "rendering pipe itself." Four ways! (After the odd bit on "format," which didn't illuminate anything for me.) Not any kind of templating, but seeing now the preview after taking out the "extra" nowikis you inserted, i see where you got that idea. And looking closely at their example, it looks a bit flawed: first word in each row has got lost, and the first pipe as well. I guess they have created a template called "!" for this purpose.
